In a first aspect, the invention relates to a method for the diagnosis of an adrenoleukodystrophy in a subject, hereinafter diagnostic method of the invention or first method of the invention, comprising determining in a sample from said subject a value selected from the group consisting of the levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate, the expression levels of sphingosine kinase 2, the expression levels sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor, the expression levels of adiponectin, the levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 1, the levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 2, the levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 3, the levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 4, the expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 5, the levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 6, the expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 7 and the expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 8 wherein increased levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate, increased levels of sphingosine kinase 2, increased levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor, decreased expression levels of adiponectin, increased levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 1, decreased levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 2, increased levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 3, decreased levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 4, increased expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 5, increased levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 6, increased expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 7, and/or increased expression levels of at least one marker as defined in Table 8 with respect to a reference value are indicative that the subject suffers from an adrenoleukodystrophy
